A Message from the President – September 2018

September, 2018

Dear Brothers in Christ,

September is upon us, summer is drawing to a close, and the fall schedule is in full swing. I pray my September letter finds each of you well, invigorated, and ready for a new year of “full speed ahead” ministry in your congregations under and with the Holy Spirit’s guidance and blessing.

Here at the Michigan District office, we too are returning to such a schedule. All our staff is back from vacation and fully ready to support and assist you in carrying out your respective ministries. Please never hesitate to contact us if you feel we can be of service.

Thank you for providing me the opportunity to continue serving you as president of the Michigan District. I am deeply honored and humbled by your trust and support as shown in the election process at convention. I will continue to work diligently on behalf of our District as I serve our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and each of you. Please continue to pray for me regularly as I daily make decisions impacting our District and her ministries.

In October we will be holding our annual All Pastors’ Conference, which will again be held at Boyne Mountain. The dates are October 7-9 (The banquet will end late on the evening of the 9th followed by a Gemütlichkeit). I’m sure that you are aware that a tremendous conference is planned. I look forward to seeing you and your wives at the conference. If you have not yet registered, please do so immediately.

The conference also marks the end of our second year in the Congregational Phase of Here We Stand (HWS). As I have been regularly reporting to you, and as Ray Zavada and Pastor Rob Appold reported at Convention, HWS has made tremendous progress to this point. Every aspect of the campaign has been extremely positive, and please know I am grateful to the many of you, and your congregations, who have helped to make the campaign such a great success to date.

Having said this, I also want you to know that we are entering a year that is critical to the overall success of the campaign. During the five years of The Future is Now campaign, which many of you participated in from 2007 to 2012, it was in the third year of that campaign’s Congregational Phase that the largest number of congregations made their commitments and gifts.

My prayer is that this pattern will also be followed in the HWS campaign. As I write this letter, we currently have 135 participating congregations, and we are grateful for each and every one. This represents approximately 37% of Michigan District congregations involved to date, which, comparatively, is more congregations participating in HWS than in The Future is Now campaign for the same amount of time. So we are on a good path entering year three.

If you are not currently a participating congregation, I ask that you please talk this over with your leadership and members this fall, especially as you enter into your budget planning process for the next fiscal year. Even if including HWS in your budget is not a viable way of participation for you – and it is not for many congregations – there are numerous other innovative ways to participate. Ray Zavada will be happy to talk with you about a variety of non-budget participation ideas. Please contact Ray at Ray Zavada to schedule a meeting with him. With your continuing help, year three of HWS will again be the year the congregations of the district will move us significantly closer to our campaign goal of $10 million. We now stand at over $5.626 million in total gifts and commitments.

I would also like to remind you that the Lutheran Adult Gathering will be taking place in October as well. The dates are October 12-14, the weekend following the All Pastors’ Conference. If you have not yet considered being part of this extraordinary event at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, please do. The speakers that have been selected to present at the event are excellent. Please check our Michigan District website for details and registration instructions. Also, I ask that you encourage your members to consider attending.

Thank you for the opportunity to bring you up to date on the HWS campaign, the fall All Pastors’ Conference, and the upcoming Lutheran Adult Gathering. Again, I look forward to seeing you this fall.

Continued blessings as we go forward in ministry and service,
